Presumptive diseases recognition for firefighters

In March 2020, the Minister asked the WorkCover Board Tasmania to review and report on the operation of section 27 of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988. Under section 27, if a firefighter who meets certain criteria is diagnosed with a particular cancer, it is presumed that their employment as a firefighter was a substantial contributing factor to the disease.

The Board engaged PwC Australia to undertake this review. In February 2021, the Board provided its analysis and recommendations to the Minister; and in June 2021, its report was tabled in Parliament.
